The federal government has announced plans to invest ₦250 billion in the construction of hostels across tertiary institutions nationwide, in a bid to address accommodation challenges and improve student welfare.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed on Friday that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure in higher institutions and create a more conducive learning environment.
According to the minister, the project will prioritise the construction of modern, affordable hostels within campuses to bridge the widening gap in student housing.
He noted that the shortage of accommodation has forced many students to seek housing off-campus, where they often face high rental costs and, in some cases, unsafe living conditions.

Alausa explained that expanding on-campus housing would not only reduce financial pressure on students but also enhance campus security and ease the burden on surrounding communities.
The government said the initiative aligns with its commitment to strengthening the education sector by providing facilities that support academic excellence and student well-being.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over overcrowding in hostels, rising accommodation costs, and deteriorating living conditions in many of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
