The Federal Government has announced plans to construct affordable and durable smart houses made entirely from bamboo for low and medium-income earners across the country, leveraging green technologies to address Nigeria’s housing deficit in an environmentally sustainable way.

This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, during a one-day capacity building workshop held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The event, themed “The Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction”, focused on integrating the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) Technologies into the nation’s housing strategies to reduce carbon footprints and promote eco-friendly solutions.

Represented by the Director of Environmental Science Technology, Mrs. Benadette Oguche, Asanye stated that the federal government is committed to deploying bamboo—a fast-growing, renewable natural resource—as the sole construction material for upcoming smart housing projects.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s green building goals, while offering affordable, adaptable, and climate-resilient housing solutions.

“By adopting bamboo in our housing construction, Nigeria will not only foster environmental sustainability but also ensure cost-effective solutions for low and middle-income households,” Asanye said.

She noted that the move will help address Nigeria’s rising housing demand, driven by a fast-growing population, without depleting natural resources or exacerbating environmental degradation.

The Permanent Secretary also highlighted that agencies under the ministry, especially NBRRI, are working to solve critical issues in the housing sector through innovation. These include addressing challenges such as the high initial capital cost of green buildings and the unstable supply chain of raw materials like bamboo.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from government, academia, and the private sector to explore practical applications of bamboo-based building systems and their role in mitigating climate change.
