The Federal Government of Nigeria has drawn widespread criticism after charging a group of minors, aged 13 to 17, with mutiny in connection with the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. The situation escalated dramatically in an Abuja courtroom, where several minors reportedly fainted while facing serious allegations of treason and intent to destabilize the government.

The minors were part of a larger group protesting against perceived government mismanagement and corruption. As they stood before the court, the weight of the charges became overwhelming. Eyewitness accounts and a viral video posted on social media by user Lawyer By Affidavit captured the moment when several minors collapsed, highlighting the intense emotional and psychological pressure they experienced during the proceedings.

The video, which has sparked outrage online, shows minors lying on the courtroom floor, seemingly unable to cope with the stress of facing severe legal consequences. This incident has raised critical questions about the government’s approach to handling youth involvement in political protests.

As details of the court proceedings emerged, social media erupted with condemnation of the government’s actions. Many users expressed outrage over the treatment of minors in this politically charged context, emphasizing that young people should not be subjected to harsh legal repercussions for exercising their rights to protest. Critics argue that the government’s decision to charge these minors with such serious offenses not only fails to recognize their age and vulnerability but also reflects a disturbing trend of criminalizing dissent.

Legal experts and human rights advocates have called for the government to reconsider the charges and focus on alternative measures that prioritize rehabilitation rather than punitive action. They argue that involving minors in high-stakes political trials could set a dangerous precedent for freedom of expression and the rights of children in Nigeria.

The next court hearing is expected to draw significant attention as activists, legal experts, and concerned citizens rally for justice and compassion for the minors involved. The public continues to demand accountability from the government, urging a shift toward a more humane approach to youth activism and political dissent.
