The federal government has condemned the recent killings in Jos, the Plateau State capital, describing the attack as tragic and assuring that perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during a press conference addressing the attack in Angwa Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, where several residents were reportedly killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants.

The minister who expressed the government’s condolences to victims and their families said the federal government sympathises with the people and government of Plateau State over the deadly incident.

According to him, security agencies responded swiftly to distress calls, with troops under ‘Operation Enduring Peace’ immediately mobilised to the affected area.

“The military and other security agencies cordoned off the area, secured key access routes and launched targeted search and clearance operations to track down the perpetrators.

“These swift actions ensured that the situation was quickly contained and further escalation was averted,” Idris said.

He noted that the response formed part of a broader security architecture being implemented in Plateau State and the North-Central region, including intelligence-led operations, reinforced surveillance and joint patrols.

Idris added that the federal government remains resolute in tackling insecurity nationwide through targeted military offensives and strategic deployments aimed at dismantling criminal networks.

He disclosed that President Tinubu had earlier held a high-level meeting with security and intelligence chiefs to review the situation in Plateau State and other parts of the country, with a view to taking decisive steps toward a lasting solution.

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, he said, had been invited to Abuja for further consultations on restoring peace and security in the state.

Idris also confirmed that the Plateau State government imposed a 24-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area following the attack to stabilise the security environment and support ongoing operations.

While describing the incident as regrettable, the minister said it did not amount to a breakdown of national security but rather a criminal act that had been decisively addressed.

“The Federal Government has directed all security agencies to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are identified, apprehended and brought to justice.

“There will be no safe haven for criminal elements anywhere in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that ongoing operations were already yielding actionable intelligence, expressing confidence that those behind the attack would be apprehended.

The minister urged Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies, warning against the spread of unverified information capable of escalating tensions.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that efforts would continue in collaboration with the Plateau State Government and other stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.

“Nigeria will not yield to fear. We will continue to act decisively to safeguard our people and preserve national unity,” Idris said.
