The federal government has declared that it will temporarily open Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, which spans 47 kilometers from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to the Eleko village junction, on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The federal Ministry of Works made this announcement in a statement obtained, indicating that this temporary opening is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to facilitate easier access and traffic flow in Lagos during the holiday season.
The federal controller of works in Lagos O.E. Dare, stated in the statement that the opening ceremony is set for 10 AM at Ahmedu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos, fulfilling a prior commitment made by the government.
During an inspection of the coastal highway project on November 23, 2025, David Umahi, the Minister for Works, assured that Section 1 would be completed and opened to traffic between December 12 and 17, 2025.

The opening of the highway is anticipated to alleviate the challenging driving conditions faced by commuters in the Lekki-Ajah corridor, significantly reducing travel time and costs.
Umahi further noted that April 2026 has been designated for the completion of Section 1 and half of Section 2 for full commissioning, excluding the bridges that are part of the Section 2 contract.
“This project must be finished. We are here on the president’s orders to ensure that the roadway is accessible to the public by December. We have reached an agreement with the contractor, and that is what we are currently evaluating.
Every effort will be made to ensure seamless access to this section from start to finish and beyond,” the minister emphasized.
Dany Abboud, the managing director of Hitech, the contractor for the project, stated, “We are on schedule, with dredging and backfilling ongoing from Chainage 34 to Chainage 37.
We are monitoring settlement in the swampy areas and water bodies due to the change in alignment,” he said, assuring that they would work around the clock to ensure Section 1 is completed and opened as promised by the minister.
Umahi argued that the opening of the highway would represent a significant achievement in the federal government’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s road infrastructure and effectively connect the country’s coastal regions.
