Two decades after her passing, family members, friends, and top dignitaries gathered in Abeokuta on Saturday to celebrate the enduring legacy of Nigeria’s former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo. The 20th memorial service, held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, was an emotional tribute to a woman remembered for her compassion, faith, and lifelong service to humanity.
Stella, the late wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was celebrated not only for her grace and warmth but also for her commitment to charitable causes and public service during her time as Nigeria’s First Lady. The event drew prominent figures including former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, among other political and religious leaders.
Speaking after the service, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo reflected on the occasion, describing it as a celebration of a purposeful life. “We are celebrating a life of service,” he said, his words echoing the sentiment shared by many who attended.
Stella’s younger brother, John Abebe, spoke fondly of her cheerful nature and resilience. He described her as “someone who was always smiling, calm, and never quick to anger.” He recalled her strength in holding the family together during moments of loss, particularly after the death of their eldest brother. “Her encouragement gave us hope during difficult times,” he added.
Her only son, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo, also reflected on her influence, describing how deeply she shaped his life and that of his children. “Her laughter and warmth remain in our hearts,” he said. “If she were alive today, she would still be the one nurturing our family with love and care.”

Former Governor Gbenga Daniel praised Stella’s humanitarian legacy, noting that her impact extended beyond her years in public office. “Even after 20 years, her influence remains strong through her son and grandchildren,” he said, recalling how he named a motherless babies’ home in her honor during his tenure as Ogun State governor.
Delivering the sermon, Rev. Yusufu Obaje paid tribute to Stella’s faith and dedication to serving others. He urged the congregation to emulate her example of humility, kindness, and commitment to community development. “Stella Obasanjo lived a life that reflected the love of Christ,” he said. “Her memory continues to inspire good works and compassion.”
The service ended with hymns and prayers, as attendees remembered a woman whose legacy of love and service continues to shine 20 years after her passing.
