The European-American University has rejected an alleged honorary doctorate awarded to popular Hausa musician Dauda Rarara, labeling the ceremony as fraudulent and unauthorized.
The event took place on Saturday at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja, attended by notable figures including Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, where Rarara and others were presented with supposed honorary doctorates by individuals impersonating university representatives.
In a statement on its official website, the university made it clear that it did not organize or sanction any such convocation in Nigeria.
“The university has not authorized any convocation to take place in Abuja, and this event was conducted fraudulently without our knowledge or consent.
“The individuals involved had no authority to represent us or to confer degrees,” the statement said.
The institution further stated that it had not awarded honorary degrees to Rarara, Alhaji Ahmed Saleh Jnr., Mustapha Abdullahi Bujawa, or Tarela Boroh, and noted that none of them are listed in its official register of graduates.

The university also distanced itself from individuals mentioned in Nigerian media as officials of the institution, including Musari Audu Isyaku (identified as the “Northern Nigeria representative”) and Idris Aliyu, who was falsely claimed to be a member of the governing council.
It emphasized that neither had the authority to represent the university.
Additionally, the statement revealed that Aliyu, who had been appointed as a fellow of the university in 2024, had his status revoked immediately due to his involvement in the alleged scam.
Reaffirming its legitimacy, the European-American University explained that it is a non-profit private institution registered in France, holding a royal charter of Incorporation from the Kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara in Uganda, not in Dominica or Panama as inaccurately reported.
The university also announced plans to contact Nigerian authorities to investigate and take legal action against those responsible for the fraudulent award ceremony.
