Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three individuals suspected of engaging in illegal gold mining in Borno State.
The arrests took place in Mallam Jakwa Town, Hawul Local Government Area, following actionable intelligence on the suspects’ illicit activities.

The suspects have been identified as Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila. Authorities say their illegal mining operations are contributing to both environmental degradation and rising insecurity in the state.
Items recovered from the suspects include a small gold measuring machine and mined gold, according to the EFCC.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court once investigations are completed.
