Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has directed contractors handling road construction across the state to operate day and night to prevent delays from the approaching rainy season. The directive was issued during an inspection of ongoing projects, including Mechanic Road in Egor and Catholic Charismatic Renewal Road in Ugbiyoko. He was accompanied by the Special Adviser on Project Monitoring, Engr. Phoebe Williams-Bello.
Okpebholo emphasised that intensified monitoring of construction sites is crucial to ensure contractors accelerate work and meet completion deadlines before heavy rainfall disrupts progress.
“Although the rainy season is already here, our goal is to achieve significant progress on these road projects before the heavy rains begin,” the governor said. “Take Mechanic Road, for instance. Residents must have access to their homes and businesses without delay. The same urgency applies to Catholic Charismatic Renewal Road in Ugbiyoko, which is why contractors must work round the clock.”

The governor reiterated that road projects remain a top priority for his administration and assured Edo residents that site inspections would continue to guarantee timely completion.
Residents of Mechanic Road and Catholic Charismatic Renewal Road welcomed the governor’s visit, expressing appreciation for what they described as long-overdue government intervention. Mr Nosa Christopher, a resident of Mechanic Road, praised the governor for addressing decades of neglect.
“We appreciate the governor for keeping his promises. This road has been practically impassable for nearly 20 years, abandoned by previous administrations,” he said.
Similarly, Mr Julius Adedoja, a landlord from Osun State, noted that the construction had restored confidence in the area. “I had considered selling my property because life here had become difficult. Now, with the road project, people are moving back in, and I have abandoned that plan,” he said.
Other residents, including Mrs Blessing Ihaze, Helen Okunbor, and David Endurance, commended Governor Okpebholo for revitalising the roads, stressing that prior administrations had neglected the area for years. They pledged continued support for the government in recognition of its commitment to delivering essential infrastructure to Edo State communities.
