The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Maria Oligbi-Edeko, has officially resigned from her position, citing the need to promote justice, fairness, and equity across constituencies.
Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan North-East II Constituency, announced her resignation during plenary on Monday in Benin City.
Her decision comes in the wake of political realignments that have seen the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) become a minority in the state House of Assembly after several members, including the speaker, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Elected Deputy Speaker on June 16, 2023, Oligbi-Edeko served in the leadership of the 8th assembly for nearly two years.
Following her resignation, the House unanimously elected Osamwonyi Atu (APC/ Orhionmwon East) as the new deputy speaker.

The motion received unanimous support.
In her resignation letter, Oligbi-Edeko expressed gratitude to her party and her constituents, stating: “My resignation is to pave the way for justice, fairness, and equity among all constituencies. I remain deeply thankful to the PDP for the opportunity to serve.”
Lawmakers praised her commitment, integrity, and dedication to public service, describing her tenure as impactful and inspiring.
