Security measures have been beefed up at the National Assembly in anticipation of President Bola Tinubu’s upcoming visit to commemorate Democracy Day in 2025.
This occasion is slated for Thursday, when the President has been formally invited to address a joint session of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
In preparation for the event, extra armed police officers, along with members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been strategically positioned at all entrances to the National Assembly building.
Access to the premises is strictly restricted to accredited journalists who are required to display identification tags, as well as essential staff members who play a crucial role in the organization of the event.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has announced a legislative initiative, aiming to propose a new law that would mandate the President to deliver an annual address detailing the state of the nation during a designated session of the National Assembly each year on June 12.

This proposed bill seeks to establish a formal tradition that the public can anticipate and engage with annually.
Bamidele underlined the significance of institutionalizing this practice, stating, “We want people to look forward to it.” He underscored the collaborative spirit between President Tinubu and the National Assembly in launching this initiative, expressing optimism that the forthcoming bill will usher in a new legislative tradition that enhances transparency and accountability within the government.
The intention is for the State of the Nation Address to become a hallmark of Nigeria’s democratic process, prompting an ongoing dialogue about the country’s progress and challenges.
