Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, has called on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to embrace peaceful co-existence, emphasizing the need for unity and legal compliance within the transport sector.
Agofure made this appeal during a familiarization visit by a faction of the NURTW at his office. The delegation sought to establish a working relationship with the ministry and brief him on their recent legal triumph.
Speaking during the visit, NURTW Chairman, Comrade Okpando Patrick, informed the commissioner about their legal victory at the Court of Appeal against their rival, Comrade Francis Ariyo. He asserted that the ruling affirmed their legitimacy in leading the union at the state level.
After receiving and reviewing the legal documents presented, Agofure cautioned against leadership tussles, urging all parties to resolve disputes lawfully and peacefully. He stressed that all activities within the union must adhere strictly to legal procedures to avoid portraying the state government in a negative light.
“The Ministry remains an unbiased umpire,” Agofure stated. “We will align with the law-abiding side in the interest of the government. Violence of any kind must be avoided.”
He further emphasized the importance of open communication, honesty, and unity of purpose as key factors for achieving long-term success in any organization.

Reaffirming the Delta State Government’s stance on peace and order, Agofure highlighted that Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori prioritizes peaceful co-existence and has the authority to proscribe any organization that threatens public order.
The meeting was attended by key government officials, including the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Victor Omoniyi; Special Assistant to the Commissioner, Engr. Austin Odiete; and other senior management staff. Also present were union leaders Dr. Okolo Gift, Comrade Umunna Nwosisi, Chief Igbine Odomero, Chief Araro Dennis, and Chief Michael Ajuya, who were assured of the ministry’s impartiality in handling union matters.
Agofure’s remarks serve as a clear message that the Delta State Government will not tolerate conflicts within the transport sector and remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and law-abiding transport system.
