The Ughelli Area Commander in Delta State, ACP Ademola Adebayo, has issued a default judgment against a police team led by ASP Jeremiah over an alleged assault on a commercial truck driver, Malcolm Esumei. The incident, which occurred on October 28, 2024, in Ughelli North, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability in the region.
Mr. Esumei, a 41-year-old driver, claimed he was violently attacked by the officers while returning from a business trip in Evwreni. He reportedly sustained serious injuries, including a blood clot in his right eye, after the officers escalated a brief interaction into an aggressive encounter. According to Esumei, when he attempted to question the officers’ actions, they intensified the assault and even issued life-threatening remarks.
ACP Adebayo, responding to the incident, condemned the officers’ actions, stating that such behavior tarnished the reputation and integrity of the police force.
“This conduct is unacceptable and undermines the honor we stand for as officers of the law,” Adebayo stated. “There is no excuse for the assault as the evidence presented is clear.”

In a rare move, ACP Adebayo has issued an official query to ASP Jeremiah and highlighted that the officers involved have been defaulted. He further emphasized that integrity and professionalism are non-negotiable standards within his command.
“As someone who has led special units like SARS and the Crack Team, I know the discipline required in high-stakes situations,” Adebayo asserted. “My officers must maintain the same level of responsibility and respect in public interactions.”
He said this disciplinary action shows that the Ughelli Area Command is committed to addressing police misconduct. The case is currently proceeding through internal channels, with further consequences expected based on investigation outcomes.
