A devastating rainstorm accompanied by violent winds and hailstones has claimed the lives of at least four people and destroyed over 1,000 houses in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State. The destruction, which occurred last week, left residents across six communities in shock as homes, schools, markets, and electrical infrastructure were severely damaged.
The tragedy was brought to public attention on Monday during a plenary session of the Kano State House of Assembly. Hon. Usman Tasiu, representing Kiru Constituency, raised the issue as a matter of urgent public importance. He identified the worst-hit areas as Rahama in Badafi Ward, Yakko Town in Yakko Ward, Ungwan Makera in Maraku Ward, Bargoni in Bargoni Ward, Dansociaya Town in Dan-Sociaya Ward, and parts of Kiru Town.
Tasiu described the downpour as one of the most destructive in recent memory, highlighting how the hailstorm and windstorm not only led to fatalities but also caused significant damage to essential infrastructure, including the felling of electricity poles. He called on the state government to act swiftly to support the affected communities with relief materials and rebuild critical facilities.
Echoing his concerns, Hon. Husseini Lawan of Dala Constituency urged the Kano State Government to release emergency funds to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to bolster its response capabilities. He emphasized the importance of immediate relief, including food and shelter, to mitigate the suffering of residents who have been left homeless and traumatized by the disaster.

Following deliberations, the Assembly unanimously urged the government to instruct SEMA to deliver immediate aid to the affected areas. Lawmakers also called on religious leaders across the state to pray against future natural disasters, emphasizing the need for divine intervention and community solidarity during such trying times.
In a related development, the Assembly discussed the role of local security support, with Hon. Ali Abdullahi of Wudil Constituency drawing attention to the contributions of vigilante groups in rural areas. He urged the state government to improve their welfare, noting that these community-based security teams have been instrumental in maintaining law and order, especially in underserved regions.
The combined call for urgent disaster relief and strengthened grassroots security highlights the dual challenges facing Kano State, climate-induced crises and the need for community-driven safety efforts. As the people of Kiru rebuild their lives, pressure is mounting on the government to act swiftly and decisively to prevent further loss and restore hope to the devastated communities.
