Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has shared an anecdote about a friend who invested $15 million in a private placement in SpaceX despite the American space company reporting a $4.6 billion loss in the first quarter.

Dangote recounted the conversation while speaking at the lunch held around the launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s Initial Public Offering (IPO), which opened to investors on Monday.

According to Dangote, he asked his friend Patrick, who is based in Geneva, why he was willing to commit such a large amount of money to SpaceX after the company had recorded billions of dollars in losses.

Key Highlights

  • Aliko Dangote shares a story about a friend who invested $15m in SpaceX despite its $4.6bn quarterly loss.
  • The friend, Patrick, said he was investing in Elon Musk’s brain, not SpaceX’s current numbers.
  • Dangote used the story to illustrate long-term investment thinking around his own refinery IPO.
  • The Dangote Refinery IPO offers 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, targeting about ₦2.15 trillion.
  • The refinery is valued at about $47.6 billion based on the offer terms.
  • The IPO follows a $2.5 billion private placement completed in July.

Investing In Elon Musk’s Brain

Patrick’s response, Dangote said, was that he was not simply investing in SpaceX’s current financial performance.

“I’m not investing in SpaceX. I’m investing in Elon Musk’s brain.”

Dangote said he then asked his friend whether he was really prepared to put $15 million behind that conviction.

“Yes,” Patrick replied, according to Dangote, adding that he believed the investment would pay off in the future.

Dangote Highlights Long-Term Investment Thinking

Dangote’s account offered an insight into how some wealthy investors assess high-growth companies, particularly businesses operating in industries where current losses may be accompanied by expectations of significant future expansion.

The example was particularly relevant to Dangote’s own pitch for his refinery IPO, which he has presented as an opportunity for Nigerians to participate in the long-term growth of a major African industrial asset.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO involves 4.1 billion shares priced at ₦525 per share, with the offer targeting about ₦2.15 trillion, or roughly $1.6 billion. The refinery is valued at about $47.6 billion based on the offer terms.

Dangote has described the public offering as a way of broadening ownership and giving ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to participate in the refinery’s growth. Reuters reported that the offer represents roughly 3% of the refinery.

Why Dangote Used SpaceX As An Example

The SpaceX example underscores the distinction between investing based solely on current earnings and investing based on expectations of future value.

SpaceX has developed businesses around rocket launches, satellite communications and other space-related technologies. Its investment appeal has been closely associated with Elon Musk’s role in building and expanding the company.

Dangote’s anecdote suggests that his friend Patrick was willing to tolerate short-term financial setbacks because he believed Musk’s ability to develop new businesses and technologies could create much greater value over time.

The comment also reflects a broader investment principle in which investors assess the people, technology, market opportunity and long-term strategy behind a company rather than relying only on its latest financial results.

Dangote Refinery IPO Opens To Investors

Dangote’s remarks came as the refinery’s IPO opened to the Nigerian public.

The offer gives investors the opportunity to buy shares in the 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which began operations in 2024 and has since become a major supplier of refined petroleum products in Nigeria and international markets.

The proceeds are expected to support the refinery’s expansion, with Dangote planning to increase its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.

The IPO follows a $2.5 billion private placement completed in July, which raised funds from institutional investors for a 6% stake and valued the refinery at about $40 billion at the time.

The public offering therefore represents another stage in Dangote’s effort to bring outside investors into one of the group’s biggest assets. Further details on the offering are available on the Nigerian Exchange website.

For Dangote, the SpaceX story appears to carry a simple lesson: investors who believe strongly in the people and ideas behind a business may be prepared to look beyond its immediate financial performance and bet on what they believe the company can become. For more updates, follow us on X.
