The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, Owerri, Imo State, has intercepted tramadol capsules and other pharmaceutical products valued at about N1.05 billion, along the Okada/Ofosu Expressway in Edo State.
The seizure was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Customs Area Controller of Zone C, Bishir Balogun, who said the operation was carried out through intelligence-driven and coordinated enforcement efforts.
Balogun explained that operatives intercepted a truck suspected of conveying contraband items.
According to him, the driver attempted to evade arrest when flagged down but eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby bush.
He revealed that a tthorough search of the truck revealed that the illicit drugs were concealed among legitimate goods in a bid to evade detection.
The seized items were estimated to have a duty paid value of N1.05 billion.
Balogun noted that the operation highlights the service’s ongoing commitment to curbing the smuggling of prohibited substances.

He warned that drugs such as tramadol and codeine continue to fuel abuse and criminal activities across the country.
Balogun cautioned smugglers to desist from illegal activities, stressing that the customs would intensify intelligence-based strategies to protect public health and national security.
He added that the seized consignment remains in custody, while investigations are ongoing to track and apprehend those responsible for the illegal shipment.
