Cross River State has recorded between January till date has recorded one fatality and two other confirmed cases of lassa fever, while 17 cases are being suspected.
The Health Promotion Officer in the state Ministry of Health, Mrs. Catherine Ukpepi, disclosed this
during a data sharing meeting organized by the ministry.
It was part of the state’s infodemic findings conducted on Lassa fever for the period March to May, 2025, which was supported by a non-governmental organisation, the Nigeria Health Watch.
Mrs. Ukpepi added that in conducting the findings, nine of the 18 local government areas responded leading to a total of 1,368 responses with Obubra Local Government Area leading with 197 responses and followed by Calabar South with180 responses.
She further explained that healthcare workers, provided the highest sources of information, while contact with rodents, formed the highest knowledge of transmission.

The health officer said lassa fever is very dangerous with high perception, rich information as well as high knowledge level about its transmission, symptoms and preventions.
Other findings include the fact that healthcare workers, radio/TV and religious leaders are the most trusted sources of information about lassa fever while significant rumours exist about its existence.
Knowledge of prevention according to the state health promotion officer, are regular washing of hands with soap and water and elimination of standing water.
Others, are the covering of mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and avoidance of close contact with anyone who has fever and cough.
