Nigeria’s former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN, CON), has raised the alarm over what he describes as a looming national security disaster in Kebbi State. In a petition dated September 10, 2025, Malami accused powerful political figures of importing armed thugs, foreign mercenaries, and sophisticated weapons into the state.
The petition, addressed to the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Comptroller-Generals of Immigration and Civil Defence, paints a disturbing picture of political violence spiraling into terrorism. According to Malami, mercenaries from Niger Republic are being recruited and armed through illegal channels to intimidate citizens, crush opposition voices, and destabilize communities.

Malami cited a recent incident on September 1, 2025, where he and several locals were allegedly attacked by armed thugs “acting with impunity and without fear of law enforcement.” He claimed that such acts were not isolated but part of a coordinated plot to entrench fear and silence dissent in Kebbi.
The petition directly implicated Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasir Idris, and his close allies, alleging ties to the terrorist group Lakurawa. Malami warned that what began as a political feud has now escalated into “a national security emergency” with implications for Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability.
Calling for urgent inter-agency intervention, Malami urged security operatives to secure border towns, block the influx of foreign fighters and arms, and launch a sweeping investigation into the alleged collaboration between state officials and extremist groups.
The petition has since been circulated among the leadership of the DSS, Police, Immigration, and Civil Defence, signaling the seriousness of the matter. Malami’s camp insists that failure to act swiftly could plunge Kebbi into chaos and endanger the wider North-West region.
Mohammed Bello Doka, Special Assistant on Media to Malami, confirmed the petition and stressed that the former Attorney General would pursue every lawful avenue to ensure the safety and stability of Kebbi State.
