Falconets defeated South Korea women 1-0 in their second Group C match at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday at Estadio Alajuela Morera Soto in Costa Rica.
The late-hour match according to West African Time, saw the U20 Nigeria women’s team take on the Asian squad squarely in an encounter delayed due to bad weather conditions.
In the course of the vital match that determines who tops the group between the two champions in their continents, having won their opening group games, the Falconets had tested the South Korean goalie severally but were unable to beat her in the first half.
South Korea U20 females before the encounter against Falconets defeated Canada 2-0 to go top of Group C after Nigeria humbled France with a late strike from Flourish Sabastine, top scorer for her team in the African qualifying series.
Prior to this crunch encounter with the formidable Falconets, the South Korea had thrashed the Chinese Taipei women 4 unreplied goals on July 26 at the Women’s EAFF E-1 Football Championship: Final Stage having earlier played a draw with the China women team and suffered a 2-1 defeat in the hands of the Japan women.

While South Korea women’s 2022 footballing campaign season is of mixed results, draws, wins and losses, the Falconets have been wonderful throughout the qualifying series where they maintained 100 per cent outcomes.
Processing the second Group C match, both teams locked horns in the tightly-fixed duel to play a goalless first-half draw without breaking the deadlock.
However, what would seem to have been heading for a goalless stalemate for the South Koreans in Alajuela, turned the other way round as Onyenezide in the 83rd minute fired Falconets the winning goal.
Consequent to the victory against the Asians, the Nigeria U20 women’s team now tops group C with 6 points having first smashed France in their opening Group C match to book their place in the quarter-finals.
The Falconets’ last Group C fixture is against Canada U20 Women’s team, who lost their opening game in a 2-0 to South Korea, on Thursday, 18 August, 2022.
