Electricity consumers in Effurun and Ugbolokposo communities have raised alarm over alleged extortion and sabotage by workers of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), calling on the company to address the issue urgently.
Residents claim that some BEDC workers deployed to their communities are engaged in unethical practices that not only exploit consumers but also deprive the Federal Government-owned electricity company of substantial revenue.
Speaking on the matter, a group of embittered consumers accused the workers of sabotaging efforts to ensure efficient service delivery. “Beyond extortion, these workers are involved in acts that undermine the company’s ability to generate revenue. This is unacceptable, and we are tired of these retrogressive activities,” one resident stated.

The aggrieved consumers, describing themselves as law-abiding citizens, emphasized their unwillingness to condone actions detrimental to the progress of BEDC. “We want BEDC to take decisive action. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their unwholesome activities,” they demanded.
Further allegations suggest these illicit practices are not confined to Effurun and Ugbolokposo but extend to Okoribi, Alegbo, and neighboring areas, raising concerns about the widespread nature of the issue.
Residents urged BEDC management to step in promptly, stressing the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement to protect consumers and restore trust in the system. The call for immediate action underscores growing frustration and highlights the urgent need for reforms within the electricity distribution sector.
The situation continues to generate heated debate, with stakeholders calling for transparency and accountability in addressing the grievances of affected communities.
