Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed disgust over the constant power outages experienced nationwide as a result of the national grid collapse, describing the recurring grid collapse as a national shame.
Obi in reacting to Thursday’s collapse of the national grid, the third within 10 days, stated that the recurring incidents of the national grid collapsing cast a shadow of disappointment on national assets management and adds to the number of failings to the Nigerian developmental structure.
He pointed out that South Africa is the second largest economy in Africa, and has just celebrated seven months of uninterrupted power supply, generating and distributing about 40, 000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles to generate and distribute 10 percent of that amount.
The LP presidential candidate further critiqued that despite the stark disparity, Nigeria continues to endorse daily power outages, adding that “the fact remains that we are all suffering equally from this failure.”
Obi said that though he is labelled a religious and tribal bigot, he has vowed to keep speaking the truth, noting that “the solution lies not in tribal or religious affiliation but in visionary leadership and shared commitment toward progress.”

Meanwhile, confirming Thursday’s national grid collapse, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, in a statement to its customers by its Head, Corporate Communications, Friday Elijah, said: “The current outage being experienced within our franchise states is as a result of loss of power supply from the national grid.
“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this morning at about 11.28hrs, November 7, 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders. We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy.”
Also, the management of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, in a statement, said: “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, November 7, 2024, at about 11.29hrs affecting supply within our network.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”
