Communal violence in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State has claimed the life of one farmer and left another seriously injured following an attack on farmland in Erei Community, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the incident.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, saying the Command is investigating allegations of murder and attempted murder reported in Erei Community.
According to the police, armed men suspected to be from Egbor Community in Erei South allegedly invaded farmland belonging to Orugbam Community, where two farmers, Mr. Nkeruwem Ikoh and Mr. Ukam Ajah Okpan, were working.

Police said both victims sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and were rushed for medical treatment. However, Mr. Nkeruwem Ikoh later succumbed to his injuries, while Mr. Ukam Ajah Okpan is receiving treatment.
“The deceased’s body has been deposited at Uwana Mortuary in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, while investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.
The Command added that detectives have commenced efforts to identify those behind the attack and ensure they are brought to justice.
The police appealed to residents of Orugbam, Egbor, and neighbouring communities to remain calm, avoid retaliatory attacks, and allow security agencies to handle the matter through lawful means.
The Command also urged members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over recurring communal clashes in parts of Biase Local Government Area, where disputes involving Erei, Orugbam, Egbor, and neighbouring communities have, over the years, resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property.
Security observers say prompt intervention by security agencies, community leaders and relevant government authorities will be crucial in preventing the violence from escalating into a wider communal conflict.
