Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has urged Team Nigeria to be good ambassadors at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as they make over 200 million Nigerians proud.

Dare said they must instil discipline and abstain from anything that will bring the image of the country to disrepute.

In a statement on Friday, before Team Nigeria left for the Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 28 – August 8, 2022, through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja, the Sports Minister warned the athletes to abhor any doping act.

According to him, Nigeria recently got commendations from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to its campaign for zero-tolerance for doping through the increased number of testings for all its athletes. AIU is an anti-doping disciplinary unit of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).

“I want to urge you to be disciplined,” Dare told the athletes.

The Sports Minister explained that modalities have been put in place to resolve issues or complaints from athletes during the Birmingham event.

“if you have any complaints, the Ministry has outlined how they can be resolved. There are just three layers for conflict resolution now and by the time you are getting to that third layer, then you are getting to me,” he said.

“So as you leave for the Commonwealth Games, remember to be good ambassadors of our dear country and strive to do us proud,” Dare added.

Also with the Sports Minister to see off Team Nigeria in Abuja, were the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee(NOC), Engineer Habu Gumel, and the Chef de Mission to the Games, Dr Simon Ebhojiaye.

Ninety-four athletes and twenty-one officials will be representing Nigeria in nine sports at the 2022 Commonwealth Games starting next week in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
