Tennessee has suspended all executions for the remainder of 2026 after death-row inmate Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital during a failed lethal injection attempt and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Governor Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive independent review of the execution process, saying the state must determine what went wrong before executions resume.

Key Highlights

  • Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital during an attempted execution in Tennessee.
  • Pike was transported to a hospital after officials halted the execution.
  • Governor Bill Lee has paused all Tennessee executions through the end of 2026.
  • A comprehensive third-party review has been ordered into the failed execution.
  • Pike was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in about 200 years.
  • The incident marks Tennessee’s second failed execution attempt in 2026.
  • Gary Wayne Sutton’s execution, scheduled for December, has also been halted.
  • Pike’s lawyers have raised concerns about the state’s lethal-injection procedures.

Christa Pike Survives Failed Execution Attempt

Christa Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

The execution was delayed earlier in the day after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit temporarily intervened. The U.S. Supreme Court later allowed the execution to proceed.

Pike was ultimately administered two doses of pentobarbital, Tennessee’s current single-drug lethal-injection protocol. However, media witnesses and court filings from her lawyers indicated that she continued breathing and remained alive after the drugs were administered.

Pike Taken to Hospital After Lethal Injection Fails

According to witnesses and Pike’s legal team, she continued breathing and was heard snoring after the execution process began. Her lawyers also reported that she still had a heartbeat and sought emergency court intervention while she remained alive.

The Tennessee Department of Correction later confirmed that Pike had been transported to an off-site medical facility. The department said its personnel followed the state’s established execution protocol and that the protocol did not provide for additional procedures beyond those carried out.

The exact nature of Pike’s medical condition and long-term prognosis has remained uncertain in public reports.

Governor Bill Lee Suspends Tennessee Executions

Following the failed execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced that all remaining executions scheduled for 2026 would be paused.

Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review to establish what happened during Pike’s execution attempt.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities,” Lee said, adding that executions must be carried out in a manner that is legal, constitutional and effective.

The suspension also affects the execution of Gary Wayne Sutton, which had been scheduled for December 2026.

Tennessee Faces Second Failed Execution in 2026

The Christa Pike case is the second execution attempt in Tennessee to fail this year.

In May, officials halted the planned execution of Tony Carruthers after medical personnel were unable to establish suitable intravenous access. The incident prompted renewed scrutiny of Tennessee’s execution procedures.

Pike’s lawyers had previously raised concerns about difficulties accessing her veins and other aspects of Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol.

The Death Penalty Information Center said Pike’s case is unprecedented in the modern U.S. death-penalty era because she survived after execution drugs had actually been administered. Previous failed execution attempts generally ended before lethal drugs were successfully injected.

Pike Was Set to Become First Woman Executed in Tennessee in 200 Years

Pike was scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in approximately two centuries.

She was convicted in connection with the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer and had remained on death row for decades.

Governor Lee rejected Pike’s clemency request shortly before the scheduled execution, leaving the death sentence in place until the failed execution attempt.

What Happens Next for Christa Pike?

The future of Pike’s case remains uncertain as Tennessee begins its review of the failed execution.

The independent investigation is expected to examine the execution protocol and the circumstances surrounding the administration of the lethal injection drugs.

Pike’s lawyers could also pursue further legal action based on what occurred during the execution attempt, particularly concerning her medical treatment and constitutional protections.

For now, Tennessee’s remaining 2026 executions remain suspended while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding Christa Pike’s failed lethal injection. For more updates, follow us on X.
