NDC chieftain Buba Galadima has claimed that the people he personally asked do not want President Bola Tinubu to return to office in 2027, while alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to retain power because of what its leaders could face if they lose the presidency.

Galadima made the comments during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, where he also argued that allowing a candidate from the Southeast to produce Nigeria’s next president could help address regional tensions. His comments were reported by several Nigerian news outlets on October 4, 2026.

Key Highlights

  • Buba Galadima said nobody he personally asked wanted Tinubu to return in 2027.
  • He alleged that the APC could “do anything under the sun” to retain power.
  • Galadima linked his position to what he described as the consequences the APC could face if it loses power.
  • He argued that the Southeast should be allowed to “taste power” as part of efforts to unite Nigeria.
  • He said his comments were based on his own conversations, not a formal opinion poll.
  • Galadima also discussed regional, religious and ethnic divisions in Nigerian politics.

Galadima Says Nobody He Asked Wants Tinubu Back

Speaking on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, Galadima said his own interactions with Nigerians had led him to conclude that those he asked did not want Tinubu to seek another term.

“Nobody I asked wants Tinubu to come back,” Galadima said, before connecting his argument to what he described as the need for regional balance.

However, his statement was based on people he personally canvassed and does not constitute a scientific opinion poll of Nigerians.

The claim comes as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations and negotiations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Galadima Accuses APC Of Desperation Over 2027

Galadima also accused the APC of being desperate to remain in power, arguing that the party knows what could happen to its members if it loses the presidency.

“The desperation with which the APC is going, they can do anything under the sun to come back to power,” he said.

He added that, in his view, members of the ruling party were aware of the consequences of losing power because of what he alleged they had done while in government.

The claims represent Galadima’s political assessment. He did not identify a specific planned action by the APC in the remarks reviewed that would substantiate the broader allegation.

Galadima Backs Southeast Presidency Argument

The NDC chieftain also presented a regional argument for the 2027 presidency, saying he believed allowing the Southeast to produce the next president could contribute to national unity.

“The only way to unite this country is to allow people from the Southeast taste power,” Galadima said.

He added that he could support the argument on any political platform and attempt to convince Nigerians that it was the appropriate approach.

Galadima also discussed how political divisions based on religion and ethnicity had affected different regions, framing the 2027 contest partly around regional rotation.

Peter Obi And Competence Enter Online Debate

Galadima’s comments have also generated reactions among social-media users, with some rejecting the idea that regional rotation should be the main consideration in choosing a presidential candidate.

Some commenters argued that the focus should instead be on the individual candidate and their record, while others linked Galadima’s Southeast argument to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Other users supported the principle of regional rotation but disagreed with applying it specifically to the 2027 election.

The reactions illustrate the competing arguments already emerging around the 2027 presidential contest, including regional representation, candidate suitability and opposition strategy.

Galadima’s Earlier Claims About 2027 Election

Galadima has previously made strong claims about the political environment ahead of the 2027 election.

Recent reports also quoted him discussing the Tinubu administration, the opposition and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai during interviews and political appearances.

In his latest comments, however, Galadima’s assertion that “nobody” he asked wants Tinubu back should be understood as a description of his personal conversations rather than evidence of a broader nationwide polling result.

2027 Contest Continues To Generate Debate

The comments come as political actors across Nigeria continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Galadima’s remarks add another layer to the debate over whether the opposition should prioritise regional power rotation, candidate-specific considerations or a broader alliance against the ruling APC.

For now, his claim about support for Tinubu is based on his own canvass, while his allegations about the APC’s intentions remain political assertions that have not independently established any specific plan to retain power.
