Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died at the age of 66 after a prolonged battle with stage four cancer.

The acclaimed Yoruba actor reportedly passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a deterioration in his health in recent weeks.

His reported death comes only days after his family and management disclosed that he was battling advanced cancer and urgently needed specialised medical attention.

As the news of his reported death spread, one of his daughters, Kira Taiwo, was seen crying during an Instagram Live session as she struggled to process the development.

In the emotional video, she was heard saying,:“I need to call my sisters. I need to call my family.”

The development has further heightened concerns among fans who had closely followed the actor’s health battle in recent days.

The reported death was also announced by Sebilu Nnajat TV, a platform owned by Islamic cleric Sheikh Al-Fulanny, who is known to have close ties with several Muslim celebrities in the South-West.

The platform shared an Islamic condolence message announcing the actor’s reported passing, writing, “Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. At last, Ogogo is gone. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”

The announcement has since triggered an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues and admirers of the veteran actor across social media.

Ogogo’s reported death comes shortly after his family revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer.

His family had appealed for assistance in finding appropriate medical treatment, stressing that they were primarily seeking access to competent medical professionals and suitable medical facilities rather than financial donations.

In an earlier emotional video, one of the actor’s daughters said the family only became aware of the severity of his condition about three weeks before making the appeal.

She explained that the family was searching for a hospital or medical specialist capable of treating him but had encountered difficulties in securing appropriate care.

The appeal generated widespread attention, prompting fans, colleagues and well-wishers to offer assistance.

Ogogo’s management later revealed that hundreds of people had indicated their willingness to help with his treatment.

Veteran actor Jide Kosoko, who spoke on behalf of the team, disclosed that more than 300 people, and eventually over 500, had offered to assist the actor.

“We have received offers from more than 300, and even over 500 people, each sincerely believing that they have something that could help him,” Kosoko said.

He, however, explained that coordinating the offers was difficult because Ogogo was already receiving treatment in a hospital and moving him from one facility to another could pose serious challenges.

“It is extremely difficult to move him from the hospital to different locations at this stage of his treatment, especially considering the large number of people who have offered to help,” he said.

Kosoko had also appealed to Nigerians to continue praying for the actor, expressing hope that he would overcome the health crisis.

“Please, continue to pray with us. We believe strongly that, with your prayers, our prayers, and the mercy of Almighty God, Taye will come out of this situation successfully. There is nothing impossible before Almighty God,” he said.

Taiwo Hassan was one of the prominent figures in the Yoruba-language film industry, having built a career spanning several decades as an actor, filmmaker and director.

He began his acting career in the 1980s and gradually rose to prominence through his performances in Yoruba-language productions.

Hassan became widely recognised for his distinctive screen presence and roles in notable productions, including Owo Blow, before featuring in numerous other Yoruba films and television productions.

Beyond acting, Ogogo contributed to the development of Yoruba cinema through filmmaking and directing, earning the respect of colleagues and generations of movie lovers.

His long-standing career established him as one of the familiar and influential faces of the Yoruba section of Nollywood.

The reports of his death have continued to generate emotional reactions across social media, with fans and colleagues mourning an actor whose career spanned several decades.

His reported passing has also drawn renewed attention to the difficult battle faced by his family and colleagues as they sought urgent medical intervention following the revelation of his advanced cancer diagnosis.
