Armed bandits holding eight worshippers from an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) congregation in Kwara State have reportedly reduced their ransom demand from ₦1 billion to ₦150 million, raising fresh concerns over the victims’ prolonged captivity and the deepening insecurity in the region.

The development, confirmed on April 10, 2026, followed initial negotiations between community representatives and the abductors.

Sources disclosed that the kidnappers had earlier demanded an astronomical ₦1 billion before lowering the figure to ₦150 million an amount still considered far beyond the reach of the affected families and their community.

The victims were abducted during a church service in Omugo community, located in the Oro-Ago District of Ifelodun Local Government Area.

The attack has since triggered mass displacement, with many residents fleeing for safety amid fears of further violence.

Community leaders report that the once-bustling settlement now lies largely deserted, with only local vigilantes and hunters remaining behind to safeguard abandoned homes and property.

Repeated appeals have been made to authorities for urgent security intervention and rescue efforts.

The incident underscores the growing menace of kidnapping across Nigeria, where armed groups increasingly exploit ransom negotiations to exert pressure on victims’ families while prolonging psychological trauma.

Security analysts warn that without strengthened intelligence-led operations and sustained security presence in vulnerable rural communities, such incidents may persist and even escalate.

The situation reflects a troubling reality for many Nigerians, where survival is often dictated not only by rescue efforts but by the ability or inability to meet steep ransom demands imposed by criminal groups operating with increasing boldness.
