Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has yet to respond to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) branch, over the union’s demand for the implementation of applicable provisions of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement.

The ASUU-TSU branch had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Taraba State Government, demanding action on the agreement, with the deadline expected to expire on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

  • ASUU-TSU says no concrete response was communicated after the meeting.
  • The union warned that the ultimatum is a formal demand for compliance, not an invitation for further consultations.

  • The state government’s position was unavailable at the time of filing the report.

ASUU-TSU Awaits Response From Governor Kefas

Chairman of ASUU-TSU, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, told our reporter on Tuesday that the union had received neither verbal nor written communication from Governor Kefas since the ultimatum was issued.

Mbave said the union had engaged officials of the state Ministry of Tertiary Education after issuing the ultimatum, but no concrete response had been communicated to members.

“We have not received any message from Governor Kefas. Neither verbal nor written communication has been sent to us from the governor,” he said.

Union Demands Implementation of ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement

According to Mbave, the demand by ASUU-TSU is based on directives and resolutions of the union’s National Executive Council concerning the implementation of applicable provisions of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement.

He said the union’s position was not intended to create instability at Taraba State University but to ensure compliance with the applicable provisions of the agreement.

“Our desire is to ensure excellent academic performance in the university. It is unfortunate that issues of unstable academic calendars seem not to bother the state government,” Mbave said.

ASUU-TSU Issues 14-Day Ultimatum

ASUU-TSU had given the Taraba State Government a 14-day ultimatum to respond to its demands.

The ultimatum was expected to expire on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Mbave urged parents, students, stakeholders and members of the university community to prevail on Governor Kefas to take action before the deadline.

“We still have more than 48 hours, but should action fail to be taken in that regard, I urge parents, students and the university community to blame the governor,” he said.

Union Rejects Further Open-Ended Consultations

ASUU-TSU also warned that its ultimatum should not be interpreted as an invitation for another round of open-ended consultations.

The union said it was making a formal demand for compliance with the applicable provisions of the agreement.

The position comes amid reports that other northern state governments have approved payments relating to demands associated with the agreement, with the Gombe State Government reportedly taking such action the previous week.

ASUU-TSU Raises Concern Over Academic Calendar

Mbave linked the union’s concerns to the stability of the academic calendar at Taraba State University.

He argued that resolving the issues raised by the union would help promote stable academic activities and improve the university’s overall performance.

The union has therefore called for action before the expiration of its ultimatum.

Taraba Government Yet to Comment

Efforts to obtain the Taraba State Government’s position on the matter were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Mike Dio Jen, could not be reached for comment.

The government’s response to the ASUU-TSU demands was therefore not available for inclusion in the report.
