The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly constructed accommodation blocks for personnel at the 6 Division Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving the welfare of its troops under the Soldier First initiative.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, July 3, 2026, Lieutenant General Shaibu described decent, secure and conducive housing for soldiers and their families as a strategic priority, stressing that better living conditions boost morale, enhance operational readiness and improve administrative efficiency.
The Army Chief noted that a well-motivated and properly cared-for soldier is better equipped to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and respond effectively to evolving security threats. He added that sustained investment in personnel welfare remains essential to building a more professional, resilient and combat-ready Nigerian Army.

General Shaibu also expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support and the provision of resources aimed at improving soldiers’ welfare, strengthening operational effectiveness and enhancing the Nigerian Army’s ability to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding national security.
The commissioning of the new accommodation blocks forms part of the Army’s broader efforts to improve the quality of life for its personnel while reinforcing morale and operational efficiency across its formations.
