The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a sweeping victory in the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, securing all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of the 376 available councillorship positions.

Justice Mobolanle Abidemi Okikiolu-Ighile (Rtd.), Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), made the official announcement during a press briefing on Sunday. She confirmed that the APC dominated the polls across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

According to the LASIEC boss, the only exception to the APC’s clean sweep came from Yaba LCDA, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched a councillorship seat, breaking the party’s total hold on the council elections.

The results reinforce APC’s strong political grip on Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve center and the party’s traditional stronghold. The outcome is being seen as a significant boost to the ruling party’s grassroots machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the near-total victory highlights the APC’s organizational strength and influence at the local level, while also raising questions about the opposition’s capacity to challenge the party’s dominance in the state.

The Lagos local government elections were closely watched as a barometer of political sentiment in the state, which has long been considered a key battleground in national politics. With the APC tightening its grip once again, analysts believe the results could have broader implications for the party’s future strategy and consolidation of power in Nigeria’s Southwest region.
