The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, says Itsekiri people are part of the Yoruba family, being direct descendants of the Yoruba forefather, Oduduwa.
He called for all groups within the Yoruba community to come together in unity and cooperation.
This declaration came during a visit from royal chiefs and leaders from the Itsekiri community, led by Chief Johnson Amatsereuleghe, the Iyase of Warri Kingdom.
The Alaafin expressed his gratitude for their visit, viewing it as a meaningful reconnection with their shared history.
Oba Owoade shared fond memories from his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) period spent in Warri, which helped him appreciate the rich traditions and culture of the Itsekiri people.
He emphasized that both the Itsekiri and Yoruba share a common heritage, suggesting that what affects one group impacts the other.

Chief Amatsereuleghe also spoke during the visit, bringing greetings from the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse I.
He described the gathering as a historic moment aimed at strengthening the bond between the Itsekiri and Yoruba peoples. He praised the Alaafin’s leadership and noted that the visit was in part to congratulate him on becoming the king.
The Warri chief highlighted the struggles the Itsekiri have faced in Delta State and expressed hope that under the Alaafin’s leadership, unity among all descendants of Oduduwa could help heal old wounds and lead to progress for everyone.
He stated, “There is no doubt about our Yoruba roots,” pointing out that their language, culture, and traditions clearly show their shared ancestry.
