The stage is set for the 2026 African U-18 and U-19 Volleyball Championship as participating teams continue to arrive in Alexandria, Egypt, ahead of the continental tournament scheduled to run until July 30 at the Pioneers Club.

Fourteen national teams have already landed in the host city, with the remaining delegations expected before Tuesday’s official draw, which will determine the fixtures for both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

Among the participating nations are Nigeria, hosts Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, and Burundi, alongside other African countries, as the championship showcases the continent’s most promising young volleyball talents.

Nigeria’s delegation departed for Egypt on Sunday after completing a one-week intensive training camp at the High Performance Centre, where players fine-tuned preparations for the championship.

The tournament will officially begin on Wednesday with a colourful opening ceremony at the Pioneers Club, expected to attract top government officials and volleyball stakeholders, including Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil, Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia, African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) President Bouchra Hajij, and other distinguished guests.

President of the Local Organising Committee, MP Aida Ismail, said comprehensive preparations have been put in place to ensure the championship meets international standards and reinforces Egypt’s reputation as a leading host of major sporting events.

Ismail, who also serves as a Board Member of the African Volleyball Confederation and a member of the FIVB Development Commission, commended the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Alexandria Governorate for their unwavering support in delivering a successful championship.

She described the hosting of the African U-18 Volleyball Championship in Alexandria for the first time as a significant milestone, noting that the city’s modern sporting infrastructure and organisational capacity continue to position it as a preferred destination for elite continental competitions.

Ismail also acknowledged the support of CAVB President Bouchra Hajij, whose commitment, she said, has been instrumental in ensuring the tournament is organised to the highest standards while promoting the continued growth of volleyball across Africa.

With final technical, organisational and logistical arrangements nearing completion, organisers are confident the championship will deliver a memorable experience for athletes, officials and fans, while further strengthening Alexandria’s credentials to host future continental and international sporting events.
