The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reassured residents of the state of their safety after the recent building collapse in Yaba.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, told newsmen in an interview that the agency has already started looking into the cause of the building collapse.

He said LASEMA is checking the materials used in the construction of the collapsed building and is also working with other experts to figure out what happened.

“We want to prevent this from happening again,” he stated.

“The safety of people is our top priority. That’s why we’ve brought together all the necessary agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Oke-Osanyintolu urged the public to work with the government to follow safety regulations, as it takes everyone’s cooperation to prevent accidents.

Regarding the people inside the building at the time of the collapse, he explained that while the exact number of casualties is still unclear, rescue teams are actively working to save anyone who might be trapped.

“So far, we have successfully rescued six individuals, while, sadly, four people have been found deceased,” he shared.

“Our main goal is to ensure safety and provide a well-organized response.”

He also emphasized that the state government plans to strictly enforce building standards and regulations.

The LASEMA boss encouraged residents to help by paying attention to safety standards and reporting any suspicious or dangerous-looking buildings.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu reassured everyone that the Lagos State government is doing everything possible to protect the lives and property of residents.

He asked the public to remain calm and allow rescue efforts to proceed without interruption.

Since the building collapsed on Friday evening, rescue operations have been ongoing, and teams will continue to work until the site is completely secured.
