APC hits back at Peter Obi, says Tinubu’s borrowing plan strategic, not reckless

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at Labour Party’s Peter Obi, insisting that President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing strategy is carefully designed to fund critical infrastructure and economic reforms, not reckless spending as alleged.

In a statement, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo accused Obi of misrepresenting the government’s fiscal direction. He said the former Anambra Governor lacks the credibility to lecture others on financial prudence, claiming Obi left behind unpaid pensions and dilapidated infrastructure during his tenure.

Oladejo stressed that borrowing is not inherently negative but depends on its purpose and impact. He explained that Tinubu’s administration is channeling funds into key sectors such as transportation, energy, and other infrastructure vital for long-term growth. He added that even advanced economies rely on borrowing to drive development, noting that Nigeria’s case is no different.

The APC chieftain further accused Obi of hypocrisy, pointing to what he described as a history of lavish spending that contradicts Obi’s public image of frugality. He contrasted Tinubu’s hands-on reforms, including subsidy removal and currency restructuring, with Obi’s style of delivering speeches that, according to him, offer no tangible solutions.

“President Tinubu is a reformer taking difficult but necessary steps to secure Nigeria’s economic future, while Obi is more concerned with catchy rhetoric,” Oladejo declared, underscoring the sharp divide between the two leaders’ approaches.
