The Federal Government on Thursday officially inaugurated the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), with its Chairman, Chibudom Nwuche, vowing to provide result-driven leadership that will accelerate infrastructure, economic, and social transformation in the Niger Delta and South-South region.

At the inauguration ceremony for the newly established regional development commissions, Nwuche expressed deep gratitude to the National Assembly for passing the enabling bill that paved the way for the SSDC’s creation.

“I appreciate members of the National Assembly who worked so hard to see that this bill was passed,” he said. “Our goal is to bring meaningful projects that impact lives, restore trust in governance, and contribute directly to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Nwuche promised to work closely with the Minister of Regional Development and key stakeholders to realize the commission’s vision. He stressed that the SSDC would prioritize infrastructure development, youth empowerment, environmental renewal, and social stability in the South-South zone, long seen as Nigeria’s oil-producing hub but also burdened by underdevelopment and environmental degradation.

Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, described the inauguration as a “landmark step” toward equitable and sustainable growth across Nigeria’s regions. He disclosed plans to sign performance bonds with commission leaders to guarantee accountability and measurable results.

“The commissions are not just about project execution, but about rebuilding public trust through the delivery of tangible results,” Momoh stated.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, hailed the commissions as a bold step in decentralizing development and urged their leaders to avoid wasteful spending while focusing on impactful projects.

Representing Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa, the Secretary to the State Government, Yusuf Ubangari, welcomed the siting of the National Council for Development Commissions (NCDC) headquarters in Nasarawa, noting that an office complex has already been provided to support its operations.

Also speaking, Senator Titus Zam Tartenger, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NCDC, pledged strong legislative oversight to ensure the commissions fulfill their mandate.

The Minister of State for Regional Development, H.E. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, described the commissions as catalysts for peace, stability, and structural renewal, emphasizing their role in economic diversification and national unity.

With the SSDC now fully operational, stakeholders say they expect Nwuche’s leadership to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development in the South-South region, positioning the commission as a key partner in Nigeria’s national development agenda.
