The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a tense moment as its National Executive Committee (NEC) meets today in Abuja, with questions hanging over the party’s planned National Convention.
The build-up to the crucial meeting followed a marathon caucus session held late Sunday night under the leadership of Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum. Addressing journalists afterward, Damagum explained that resolutions from the caucus would be unveiled at the NEC gathering.
Despite this assurance, fresh uncertainty surrounds the convention, as the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, is yet to endorse the mandatory notification letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The absence of his signature has cast doubt on whether the convention can proceed as scheduled.
Party insiders revealed that the secretary’s delay is slowing down preparations. One source noted that until the INEC notification is signed, the timeline for the convention remains in limbo. “It appears the secretary is still consulting or weighing his options, which has left many members anxious. The NEC must now step in to provide clarity so the party can move forward in unity,” the source said.

The Sunday night caucus meeting brought together heavyweight figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, and senior party stakeholders.
Today’s NEC meeting is expected to decide on two critical issues: the ratification of the zoning committee report led by Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri, and disciplinary actions against members accused of anti-party activities.
For the PDP, the outcome of this meeting could shape its unity and direction ahead of future elections.
