Santos football Club has parted ways with coach Cleber Xavier after suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat at home to Vasco da Gama in Brazil’s Serie A.
This loss marks Santos’ worst home defeat in a Brazilian league match and their largest margin of defeat against Vasco in 98 years of competition between the two teams.
“Santos announces the departure of coach Cleber Xavier,” the eight-time champions of Brazil’s top division stated in a social media update.
“The club thanks the coach for his contributions and wishes him success in his future endeavors.”
Xavier, who previously served as an assistant to Brazil’s national team coach Tite, recorded five wins, four draws, and six losses since taking over from Portuguese coach Pedro Caixinha in April.

Sunday’s match also represented the largest defeat of Neymar’s career.
The 33-year-old had recently helped improve the team’s standing with impressive performances following his return from injury.
During the later stages of the match at Morumbi Stadium, Santos fans were seen cheering for Vasco’s goals and turning their backs to the field for long periods.
Currently, Santos sits in 15th place in Brazil’s 20-team Serie A, with 21 points from 19 matches.
Former Argentina and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli, who previously managed Santos in 2018 and 2019, is the leading candidate to take over from Xavier.
