The federal government has approved nine new private universities across the country.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this on Wednesday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and other officials in Abuja.

He disclosed that the new universities are Tazkiyah University in Kaduna State, Leadership University in Abuja, Jimoh Babalola University in Kwara State, Bridget University in Mbaise, Imo State, Greenland University in Jigawa State, JEFAP University in Niger State, Azione Verde University in Imo State, Unique Open University in Lagos State, and American Open University in Ogun State.

Alausa explained that the current administration took over with a backlog of 551 requests to start new colleges and universities, which were carefully reviewed.

After this process, the federal government narrowed the screening down to 79 active applications, and on Wednesday, nine of the requests were approved.

He highlighted that many of the new universities have been waiting for accreditation for over six years, with their founders having invested a lot of time and money into building campuses.

Alausa noted that delays in the approval process were due to challenges within the National Universities Commission (NUC), but reforms have now been put in place to speed up the application process.
