Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods that swept through Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo communities in Afikpo Local Government Area, as well as Azuoto Okpuitumo in Abakaliki Local Government Area, leaving deaths and destruction in their wake.
The floods, which began on Friday and only started to recede on Monday, displaced families, destroyed properties, and claimed lives, sending shockwaves across the state.
In a heartfelt message released on Tuesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru condoled with the bereaved families and all residents who suffered losses. “I received with deep sadness the news of the devastating flood. I sincerely condole with the families who lost loved ones, as well as all who suffered losses during this unfortunate incident. As a government, we stand with you in this moment of grief and will provide the necessary support to help you recover and rebuild,” he said.

The Governor assured that his administration would work hand in hand with affected communities, local authorities, and relevant agencies to ensure that relief materials, rehabilitation efforts, and preventive measures are swiftly delivered.
Nwifuru also used the tragedy to stress the urgent need for residents to take climate change seriously in their daily lives, especially during the rainy season. “This tragedy is a sober reminder of the urgent need to integrate climate change considerations into our flood risk management strategies,” he warned.
This latest disaster adds to the growing list of climate-related challenges facing Ebonyi State and other parts of Nigeria, highlighting the pressing need for proactive environmental and infrastructural measures to prevent future devastation.
