Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is reportedly in active discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other key political players, fueling speculation about another major opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Confirming the development, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, revealed in Abuja on Thursday that Obi remains open to strategic conversations with political parties and individuals who are genuinely committed to building a better, more inclusive Nigeria. According to Dr. Yunusa, the former Anambra governor is focused on uniting progressive forces across party lines to rescue the nation from its current socio-political and economic challenges.

Obi, who exited the PDP in May 2022 over disagreements related to zoning arrangements, rose to prominence as the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer. He redefined the opposition landscape by mobilizing millions of Nigerians, particularly youths, under the now-influential Obidient Movement, a mass grassroots coalition that demanded transparency, accountability, and leadership driven by competence.

With the 2027 polls drawing closer, many observers see Obi’s recent engagements as a calculated effort to consolidate opposition strength and foster another coalition using the PDP capable of confronting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His ongoing talks with the PDP and other political groups suggest that the former governor is weighing all options to ensure a unified front that can present a serious challenge to the status quo.

The potential alliance is already generating nationwide buzz, especially after PDP stalwart and elder statesman, Professor Jerry Gana, described Obi as a credible candidate who, if chosen, could restore equity and give all Nigerians a renewed sense of belonging. Gana’s remarks during a recent interview on Arise TV have further fueled speculation that high-level negotiations may already be taking shape behind closed doors.

While Peter Obi has yet to officially declare his political path for 2027, the signals from his camp are clear, he is actively exploring partnerships that align with his vision for a reformed and accountable Nigeria. As momentum builds, many political watchers believe the coming months could redefine the future of Nigeria’s opposition politics and reshape the 2027 presidential race.
