The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau has announced that the draft for the amendments to the 1999 Constitution will be completed and sent to state Houses of Assembly by December.
He shared this information through the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele during a public hearing in Lagos.
Barau highlighted that the amendment process is inclusive and focused on public feedback, emphasizing the Senate’s dedication to representing the opinions of Nigerians.

He mentioned that key issues under consideration include state police, judicial reforms, the creation of new states, and gender inclusion.
For the proposed amendments to take effect, they must be approved by at least 24 of the 36 state Houses of Assembly.
The Senate aims to finish this stage by the end of the year, in preparation for the political landscape in 2026.
