Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has sadly passed away at the age of 61, following a prolonged illness.
Known affectionately by his nickname, Dodomayana, Rufai was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most talented goalkeepers, leaving a significant impact on the sport throughout his impressive two-decade career.
Rufai began his professional journey in the late 1980s, playing for various clubs across Europe, including notable stints in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

His prowess between the sticks earned him the esteemed position of first-choice goalkeeper for the Nigerian national team, where he proudly represented his country in two FIFA World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 1998, as well as in multiple Africa Cup of Nations competitions, helping Nigeria secure notable victories.
The news of Rufai’s passing comes as the football world mourns another tragic loss, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain alongside his brother earlier the same day.
