Chess master Tunde Onakoya has responded to criticisms over his visit to President Bola Tinubu during the recent Salah holiday.

While he was among notable figures visiting the president in Lagos, the public reaction has been mixed, with some accusing him of aligning too closely with the government.

In response, Onakoya took to his X handle to clarify his stance.

He emphasised that visiting someone does not imply support for their actions or policies, reiterating his desire to remain apolitical.

The chess master acknowledged the diverse reactions to his visit, affirming that every opinion matters.

Highlighting his accomplishments, Onakoya mentioned his status as a Guinness World Record holder and his recent recognition in New York, asserting that connecting with the highest office in his country is not a wrongdoing.

He pointed out that he has previously declined offers of awards.

Onakoya also discussed his work through “Chess in Slums Africa,” explaining that his initiative is focused on education rather than politics.

He said he aims to help children develop critical thinking skills and improve their educational prospects, particularly for those who struggle with access to formal schooling.

He underscored that his project is about empowerment rather than merely providing charity.

Looking ahead, Onakoya said he is determined to continue his advocacy for chess and education without compromising his values.

He expressed gratitude for the support he has received, noting that his initiatives have been community-driven rather than reliant on international funding.

Onakoya shared an example of his ongoing collaboration with the Lagos State Government to help street children reintegrate into education, celebrating the success of a child who recently graduated from a vocational programme.

He reaffirmed his commitment to positively impacting children’s lives, emphasizing the complexity of the underlying issues.

Onakoya invites the public to hold the government accountable, while maintaining a focus on the broader challenges faced by society, ultimately prioritizing the needs of children in his endeavors.
