The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project as a transformational milestone — one they say has effectively silenced vocal critics like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

Describing the massive infrastructure push as “historic,” Ohanaeze expressed deep satisfaction with Tinubu’s commitment to national development, adding that this project, once dismissed by opposition figures as a white elephant, is now becoming a symbol of Nigeria’s progress under the current administration.

Ohanaeze’s endorsement came through a statement issued Tuesday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Thompson Ohia. The group congratulated President Tinubu ahead of the official commissioning scheduled for May 25, 2025, where he is expected to unveil 30 kilometers of Section One of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and an additional 10 kilometers of Section Two. Also on the lineup is the commissioning of 10 kilometers of the Sokoto-Badagry route at the Kebbi axis.

According to the statement, these infrastructural feats are not just roads but lifelines that will strengthen Nigeria’s unity, energize economic growth, and uplift communities long neglected by previous administrations. Ohanaeze applauded the Federal Executive Council and specifically commended Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, for what it called “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to timely project delivery.”

“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has become a testament to effective governance. It has quieted the cynics, Obasanjo, Atiku, and Peter Obi, who dismissed it as wasteful and unrealistic. Today, the facts on the ground tell a different story,” the statement said.

Calling on opposition leaders to “swallow their pride and applaud progress,” Ohanaeze urged political actors to rise above partisan bitterness and embrace the unifying impact of transformational leadership.

The group also spotlighted other federal projects in the Southeast, including the ₦25 billion Abakaliki-Afikpo Flyover, the ₦450 billion 77-kilometer Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, and ₦30 billion Phase One of the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road. These initiatives, it noted, will restore Igbo confidence in the Tinubu administration and drive much-needed economic revitalization in the region.

As the second anniversary of Tinubu’s presidency approaches on May 29, 2025, Ohanaeze believes these achievements will stand as cornerstones of his legacy. The group affirmed its continued advocacy for inclusive development and national unity, stressing that the way forward must be collaborative and focused on delivering real impact to all Nigerians.

“This is not just about roads; it’s about reconnecting a fractured nation through visionary leadership. We commend Senator Umahi for steering this success and call on every well-meaning Nigerian to celebrate this win for the country,” the statement concluded.
