Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced his administration’s plans to close down the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri within the next few weeks.
This announcement was made during an early morning visit to the camp on Monday, where Gov. Zulum engaged with residents and assessed their living conditions.
The decision to shut down the Muna camp aligns with Gov. Zulum’s broader strategy to close all formal IDP camps throughout Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.
The initiative is aimed at facilitating the transition from emergency humanitarian assistance to sustainable recovery and resettlement programmes.
Muna camp was established in the wake of the severe humanitarian crisis triggered by ongoing violence and conflict in the state, and it currently accommodates approximately 10,000 displaced individuals.

During his visit, the governor highlighted that around 75 percent of the camp’s residents have already been successfully resettled to their home communities, a testament to the progress made in addressing displacement issues in the state.
Gov. Zulum assured the remaining inhabitants of the camp that the government is committed to providing essential support and resources to enhance their livelihood as they prepare to reintegrate into their communities.
He emphasized that the closure of the Muna camp will represent a pivotal milestone in the state’s efforts to shift from short-term humanitarian responses to long-term development initiatives that foster stability and self-sufficiency for the displaced population.
During his first term in office, Gov. Zulum had made a firm commitment to dismantle all IDP camps in the state capital, and he has largely fulfilled this ambition, having closed over 12 camps to date.
This ongoing effort reflects a concerted push towards rebuilding lives and restoring dignity for those affected by the humanitarian crises in Borno State.
