The Chairman of Calabar Municipality, Apostle James Anam, has decried the deplorable state of the local government council upon his assumption of office, revealing that he met only N45,000 in the government’s account.
Speaking to journalists in his office, Anam lamented the lack of essential infrastructure, including electricity, water, and security. He described the council premises as an open zone where theft occurs unchecked.
“The place is just a free zone. Nothing is working in any office—not even my own. The legislature has no functional meeting space, and rodents have taken over the premises,” he said.
The chairman further disclosed that health centers have been destroyed, schools vandalized, and markets left in a dilapidated state.

Determined to restore normalcy, Anam outlined his plans to remodel the council offices, renovate political and administrative blocks, and resurface roads to restore public confidence in the local government.
On electricity, he stated that a committee has been set up to recover the vandalized transformer and work towards restoring power. Plans are also in motion to rehabilitate the markets and healthcare facilities.
“We need to show the people that there is a functioning government in place,” Anam emphasized.
