Super Eagles stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey have finally settled the debate on their favorite African dishes, and their choices are as classic as they come—pounded yam and jollof rice.
In a recent episode of Iwobi’s YouTube show, the Fulham duo engaged in a lighthearted chat about food, culture, and football. When asked about their all-time favorite African dishes, Iwobi went for the traditional and reliable option—pounded yam with egusi soup. He explained that while many people might opt for jollof rice, he believes pounded yam is the true staple.
“For reliability’s sake, I’m going to say pounded yam. Some people say jollof rice, but I say pounded yam,” Iwobi said with conviction.
Bassey, on the other hand, was team jollof rice all the way. For him, jollof isn’t just a meal—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Given its widespread popularity across Africa, the defender had no hesitation in choosing it as his GOAT dish.
Though both players were born abroad—Bassey in Italy and Iwobi in Lagos before moving to England as a child—they have deeply embraced Nigerian culture since committing to the Super Eagles. From their fluent use of Nigerian slang to the unmistakable Naija accent they sometimes adopt, the duo has seamlessly blended into the team’s camaraderie.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen recently shed light on Chelle’s expectations, revealing that the coach demands intensity, discipline, and commitment from every player.
“He’s going to be very demanding,” Osimhen shared. “He told me he needs me and the senior players to set the tone. If you don’t run or fight for every ball, you won’t play.”
