The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed its commitment to transparency and internal democracy following the recent ruling of the Rivers State High Court. In a press statement issued today, January 16, 2025, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP announced its acceptance of the court’s judgment, which nullified the Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses conducted in Rivers State on July 27, August 10, and August 31, 2024.

The judgment, delivered on January 13, 2025, declared the congresses void and affirmed Hon. Nname Robinson Ewor as the legitimate leader of the Rivers State PDP Executive. The NWC has expressed full support for the Ewor-led executive, charging it with the responsibility of piloting the party’s affairs in accordance with the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

In its statement, the NWC described the court’s decision as a testament to the PDP’s reputation as a party committed to due process and adherence to the rule of law. The leadership further commended the judgment for reinforcing the party’s dedication to internal democracy and strict compliance with its guidelines for conducting congresses.

The PDP has called on all party members, leaders, and supporters in Rivers State to rally behind the Ewor-led executive to promote unity, stability, and growth within the party. The NWC emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure the continued success of the PDP in Rivers State, urging members to work towards fostering harmony and delivering on the party’s democratic promises.

The NWC also highlighted the exemplary performance of Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who has been delivering the dividends of democracy in line with the PDP’s manifesto. It encouraged the Ewor-led executive to build on this foundation by further uniting the party and maintaining its focus on the aspirations of the Rivers State people.

National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba, who signed the statement, praised the dedication and resilience of PDP members in Rivers State. He reaffirmed the party’s mission to remain a truly democratic and inclusive organization driven by the collective will and aspirations of its members.

The PDP’s acceptance of the court ruling is a big loss to the FCT Minister Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike and his followers. As the Ewor-led executive takes charge, all eyes will be on its efforts to ensure stability and the continuous delivery of democratic dividends in Rivers State.
