The Taraba State HIV/AIDS Control Agency (TACA) has challenged women in the state to stand against the escalating threat of gender-based violence, including incidents of rape.
The charge was given during a sensitization campaign organized by the agency held at Kpantinapu village in Yorro Local Government Council of the state.
At the event, the agency highlighted the importance of education, self-defense and community support in addressing the issue of gender-based violence.
Shepuya Atiku, who led the sensitisation team, while calling on survivors of gender-based violence to break their silence and seek support, emphasized that raising awareness and empowering women are crucial steps in preventing gender-based violence.
The event which was part of the 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls 2024, had the theme: “Speak up,” and was organized by TACA in collaboration with the Network of People With AIDS in Nigeria, Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative, Key Population Secretariat and the National Human Rights Commission.

The representative of AHNI-USAID, Mrs. Rashidat Mahmoud, encouraged non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations to intensify their efforts in eradicating gender-based violence in the state and in Nigeria.
She also advised victims of rape to waste no time in visiting hospitals for medical confirmation before reporting the incident to security agencies.
Taraba State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Yakubu Garpha, assured victims og gender-based violence of their rights, urging them to report violations to the commission for swift action.
“Our doors are open to all citizens who face victimization,” he stated, promising that the commission is committed to bringing perpetrators to justice.
