Private Blessing Akpan of the Nigerian Army made history by winning the nation’s first gold medal in the track and field at the Africa Military Games holding at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
Akpan’s victory was announced by the army in a statement on its X and Facebook handles to celebrate the feat.
The athlete won the medal in the 100 metres hurdles, finishing in 15.51 seconds to clinch the gold medal, ahead of Stephanie Abu of Ghana, who finished in 15.54 seconds while another Nigerian, Stella Ogu, took the bronze.
With 87 gold medals, Nigeria tops the medal tally, followed by Algeria with 42 medals and Kenya in third with 12 medals. Uganda, Tunisia, Libya, and South Africa have four gold medals each.

Thousands of athletes and officials from all around Africa are taking part in the games with 20 events are up for contest.
The games began on November 20 and will end on November 30.
